Thankfulness

As we approach Thanksgiving this year, I hope we will “Count Our Many Blessings” as this sweet hymn teaches so enthusiastically through music. (See below.) We all have much to be thankful for each day. One of my sweet blessings is our newest granddaughter Bridget, who was born on October 27, 2025. I was privileged to help with her care for two weeks after she was born, including on Halloween!

Quotes

When I was looking up quotes about “thankfulness” for writing my November Post, I found this quote by Lisa Appelo:

"Happy moments, praise God. Keep praying. But when things are hard, thank God. Thanking God through our troubles is the greatest form of worship."

Please click here to go to Lisa’s beautiful website and read her inspiring story about being a new widow and how she has continued to trust in God.

This next quote by Dallin H. Oaks expresses a similar perspective:

“When we give thanks in all things, we see hardships and adversities in the context of the purpose of life. We are sent here to be tested. There must be opposition in all things. We are meant to learn and grow through that opposition, through meeting our challenges, and through teaching others to do the same.”

This quote comes from his encouraging talk, “Give Thanks in All Things.

Scriptures

The scriptures have many powerful messages about thankfulness. Here are three:

In every thing give thanks:
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18

…being commanded of God to
pray without ceasing,
and to give
thanks in all things.
— Mosiah 26:39

O Lord my God,
I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
— Psalm 30:12

Hymn

I hope you will enjoy this YouTube video of the hymn, “Count Your Many Blessings.”

Lyrics

1.

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings; name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

CHORUS

Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your blessings; See what God hath done.
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings; See what God hath done.

2.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings; ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

CHORUS

Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your blessings; See what God hath done.
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings; See what God hath done.

3.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you his wealth untold.
Count your many blessings; money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven nor your home on high.

CHORUS

Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your blessings; See what God hath done.
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings; See what God hath done.

4.

So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged; God is over all.
Count your many blessings; angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

CHORUS

Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your blessings; See what God hath done.
Count your blessings; Name them one by one.
Count your many blessings; See what God hath done.
